I was too trusting of the nifty ATMs that take checks without an envelope. I used the ATM outside our cafeteria at work to make deposits many times. I never had any problem, until last time. I usually deposit printed business checks. This time it was a handwritten personal check. The machine took it, tried to scan it but it had problems. Each check contains an account and routing numbers that are printed with magnetic ink. The ATM reads the magnetic ink and then reads the amount by using Optical Character Recognition. Customers are asked to confirm the amount of every deposit. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home. Cash deposits to a no-envelope ATM might be available immediately or within one business day. Check deposits typically post on the same day you deposit, but your bank might only make the first $200 of your check available within one or two business days. The remaining amount should be available for use after a few business days.

Deposit Checks Atm Credit Union
BOL User Jac Filer (aka JacFSB) has contributed an ATM checklist used primarily for branch and/or compliance staff to conduct periodic reviews of their ATMs. While general in nature, it includes questions on ADA, signage, security and transaction/compliance issues. While it is not network-specific the comment space at the bottom could accommodate any unique needs/features of a particular institution or ATM.
